R+B Selected as Architect of Record for the New Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies at the Aspen Institute in Aspen, Colorado

ASPEN, CO — APRIL 28, 2020 —  Rowland+Broughton Architecture / Urban Design / Interior Design is proud to announce that we are serving as Architect of Record with Jeffrey Berkus Architects, for the new Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies on the Aspen Institute campus in Aspen, Colorado. Located on the south side of the campus and adjacent to the Boettcher Building, for which R+B is leading an architectural renovation, the new center recently received unanimous approval by the Aspen Historic Preservation Commission.

At approximately 7,500 square feet, the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies will allow the Aspen Institute to preserve and honor the art of architect Herbert Bayer, who designed the Aspen Institute’s historic campus and whose prolific work represents the fullest expression of the Bauhaus movement in America. Upon completion, the Aspen Institute will be able to showcase and exhibit its collection of Bayer’s paintings, tapestries and other works, grow its collection, borrow from major cultural institutions, and create new exhibitions that will educate the public about his remarkable legacy.

Projected for completion late fall of 2021, the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies will be architecturally aligned with the rest of the Aspen Institute grounds to give visitors an immersive experience and bring to fruition Bayer’s vision of the campus as a total work of art.

“We are extremely proud to be a part of this important undertaking in honor of one of Aspen’s, and America’s, foremost Bauhaus architects,” shares R+B Principal Sarah Broughton. “Herbert Bayer was largely influential in informing the architectural vernacular of Aspen’s early Victorian days, as well as the Aspen Modern movement. Our role as Architect of Record for the new Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies will lay the groundwork for and facilitate the building of the project via outreach to the City of Aspen and the local community.”

“On a personal level, the project is close to home, literally a block away from where John (Rowland) and I live,” Broughton adds. “As strong supporters of the arts, we are honored for R+B to join forces with Jeffrey Berkus Architects, Bernard Jazzar, and the Aspen Institute team to bring it to life.”
